Equality News Update: Launch of Scottish Human Rights Declaration

FCE Manager Nina Munday will be attending the launch of the Scottish Human Rights Declaration on 19 Febrary 2018. FCE is one of over 100 signatories to the new declaration which includes trade unions, national charities and professional bodies such as the British Medical Association.

The Scottish Human Rights Declaration will call for law and policy makers to take all steps possible to protect and progress human rights in the face of the UK’s departure from the EU. The event will also present new research showing considerable support for human rights among the Scottish population.

When asked for the best words to describe human rights,  most people describe themes as ‘freedom of speech’ (17%), equality (15%), rights (11%) and fairness (10%).

The research also show there is a lack of knowledge with 45% of people did not know any words they would associate with human rights and almost three quarters not knowing who they would approach for help with human rights.

For information, in Scotland and the UK the Human Rights Act 1998 is in force and covers a range of rights which can be seen to protect the individual, by limiting institutional or state discrimination which might harm them.

By contrast, the Equality Act 2010 can seen as being more specific and to be concerned with legislating and public interactions in a way that is inclusive (e.g. reasonable adjustments). It details specific laws and rights for environments (e.g. at work or study) or services and covers equality groups that are known to be at disadvantage.
