International Women’s Day – #BalanceforBetter 08 March 2019

International Women’s Day takes place annually on 08 March, the theme for 2019 is #BalanceforBetter.

International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic, cultural, social and political achievements made by women. It also aims to raise awareness of and further gender equality.

One of the first observances of International Women’s Day was in 1908, in which 15,000 women marched in New York demanding better working hours, better pay and equal voting rights. Since then, there have been huge steps working towards true gender equality however, there is still a long way to go.

The theme for this year is #BalanceforBetter, which focusses on collective action, from grassroots activism to global campaigns, it will be taking place all year – to help increase gender-balanced boardrooms, government, media coverage, employees, wealth and sport.

The Independent have released a great video, covering the history of the day, this year’s theme and what you can do to get involved:

Nina Munday, Manager of Fife Centre for Equalities adds:

“At FCE, we are passionate about empowering marginalised women, such as those that are disabled, minority ethnic, transgender or living with poverty. Over the past year, we held events under the banner of ‘Fife Women and Inclusion in Politics’ to help women to build their political voice at grassroots level. You can find out more in Our Story so Far.”

To celebrate the achievement of the Fife Women and Inclusion in Politics programme – we invite you to our final event, on Sat 16 Mar 2019, at CISWO Glenrothes, from 12:00 to 16:00. Please register using the form below:
