World Refugee Day takes place annually on the 20th June. The theme for 2019 is #StepWithRefugees

World Refugee Day aims to recognise the perseverance, courage and strength of millions of refugees worldwide to escape conflict and violence.

The day was first commemorated globally in 2001, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Before this, the day was being celebrated by a number of individual countries – the biggest being “Africa Refugee Day”.

The theme for 2019’s day is “#StepWithRefugees” – encouraging you to walk a mile in refugees’ shoes, nominating three of your friends to take on the challenge as well.

In Scotland, there is the Refugee Festival Scotland which runs from the 20 – 30 June 2019. There is a whole host of exhibitions, community events, workshops and more. The programme can be found here.

The IKEA Foundation have released a video celebrating World Refugee Day, highlighting the work done in Ethiopia to integrate refugees with the local communities;
