Equality News Update: The Herald: Holyrood to probe anti-Muslim hatred in Scotland

Reported by The Herald – the news we share raises awareness of equality issues being reported in the media.

THE first inquiry into Islamophobia in Scotland is to be set up by Holyrood.

The parliament’s cross-party group on tackling the problem has teamed up with Newcastle University to assess its nature, extent and impact on children, young people and families.

It will also look at the role of traditional and social media, the public sector and politicians, and at what steps can be taken to challenge and overcome anti-Mulsim bigotry.

The CPG on Tackling Islamophobia, founded by Glasgow Labour MSP Anas Sarwar, is now seeking views from individuals, employers and organisations about their experience of the issue.

Mr Sarwar said: “I am delighted that the CPG is launching the first ever public inquiry into Islamophobia in Scotland. We have established that Scotland is not immune from Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred.

“The fight against hate is a fight for all of us; and working together we can build a Scotland free of Islamophobia and all forms of prejudice.”
