Equality News Update: Daily Record: Hamilton care home to reduce loneliness among older people by sending postcards

Reported by Daily Record – the news we share raises awareness of equality issues being reported in the media.

A Hamilton care home has been helping to reduce loneliness among older people – simply by sending a postcard.

Residents at Abbeydale Court Care Home in Eddlewood signed up to participate in the Postcards for Kindness initiative.

And they also teamed up with youngsters from West Park Nursery and Chatelherault Primary, who helped them write their postcards.

Lynn Adam, wellbeing coordinator at the care home, said: “The Postcards for Kindness group was founded by Louise Baker and now has 27,000 members.

“It involves care homes all around the world and we were one of the first in Scotland to join this group. It allows residents to make and send various cards to other care homes and is a great topic of conversation over a cuppa.

“It has had a fabulous reaction, with our residents reading their mail, and indeed writing postcards, as it brings back lovely memories for them.

“Because of this, we are also now involved with the inter-generational programme and have involved schools and nurseries in Hamilton to engage with us and help the residents write their cards.

“A big thank you to those at West Park Nursery and Chatelherault Primary School for the continued support.”

The pupils and residents enjoy meeting up regularly and celebrating the initiative at the care home.

Meanwhile, the residents also participated in the BBC’s A Musical Tea Party recently.

Hosted by Adam Hunt, residents, families and friends were invited along to create some wonderful memories through music and set up playlists that evoke memories and emotions.

The residents have also created a football memory box thanks to a donation from Councillor Mo Razzaq.

A typical football memory box contains 14 standard items, including an old football, old pair of football boots, replica vintage football shirt, a team or country flag, a tammy, old football rattle, carbolic soap, jar of Bovril and more.

Lynn added: “Residents at Abbeydale Court had a fantastic night celebrating BBC Music Day. Our aim was to use music to enhance the wellbeing of our residents.
