A report by Samaritans Scotland has shown that deaths by suicide increased by 6% in 2019, at 833 deaths by suicide registered in Scotland, an increase from 784 in 2018. While suicide rates for both men and women peak among those aged 45-54, the rate among young people aged 14-25 increased for the second consecutive year.
The Suicide Prevention Action Plan will conclude in 2021, with the Scottish Government and COSLA working on the next stage. Hopefully this new strategy will address the new environment that we’re all living in due to COVID-19, as well as the underlying issues and inequalities.
