NEW concerns have been raised about a poverty crisis in Scotland as it has emerged that the numbers claiming benefits has nearly doubled during the Covid-19 pandemic – despite government support schemes.


Since November 2019, the claimant count of people applying to Universal Credit and Jobseeker’s Allowance has almost doubled from 111,280 to 210,750. The furlough scheme has been extended to April 2021, to help support those in employment. Since March 2020 around 10 million jobs have already been claimed for under furlough.
